The Abyss contains the Inferno which is divided into nine concentric circles, with Satan himself at the bottom, stirring endlessly with his wings, the icey winds that keep the pit freezing.
Condemned Sinners are placed throughout the circles according to the gravity of their sins. The law of Hell is the law of symbolic retribution. As one sinned in life, so one is eternally punished. Thus the gluttonous are punished by being eaten, wallowing in their own garbage. The murderers are steeped in boiling blood. The cold hearted treacherous freeze. And so on.
In Hell, the torment issues from the very nature of the damned person. He writhes in torment of his own perpetually perverted nature.
